What do I need to do now? I have squashed the ants that were making some apple tree leaves withered & brown?

I doubt that ants are the real culprits. If the leaves were withered and brown as you describe the cause is more likely to be Fruit Tree Red Spider Mite. Check the leaves for the presence of mites and, if they prove to be the problem, spray with an acaricide in May or Early June.
