How to decorate a bed? Best choice for bedding?

I'm having a hard time deciding what the best option is when it comes to bedding. I used to buy comforter sets but the problem is they all don't last long once washed. I tried a down alternative comforter but that too once washed bunched up (the filling on the inside) and dry cleaning is too expensive every few weeks. Also I don't like a big white comforter, it's pretty boring. Duvet covers are all horrid and too messy for me. I looked at some plain washable quilts with a blanket thrown over top and that seems warm, functional, washable and cute. Just wondering what kind of linens do you have on your bed and how did you decorate it to spice it up?
