How fast is instant messaging on the LG Rumor for Sprint?

On all the phones I've had in the past with Sprint, IMing always consisted of a bunch of "connecting, please wait... sending, please wait..." Basically, sending and receiving just one or two IMs would take minutes. How fast is AIM on the LG Rumor? Is it basically instantaneous or does it take a second or two? I'm thinking about getting one but don't want to spend 2 minutes sending an IM.
