Can you sue a police officer/detective for slander?

We all know police officers are human beings that can be influenced by their biases or jealousy and all other human flaws. My question is that can you file a claim against a police officer/detective for slander over some false accusations and outright frauds they write in a police report because they just have it in for you. A lawyer aquaintance said that this falls under malicious prosecution. Is that correct?
